Our Group:
Our group is composed of men and women from a variety of backgrounds. We have teachers,
surveyors, lawyers and even the odd tax collector. We are a group that allows female participation at whatever level the individual
feels she wants to pursue. This means, yes, at times we have women in the ranks, but then a few slipped through even in the
18 th century.
Our mission is to recreate the historical
unit and portray it in a dynamic and educational manner for the public at large. We work closely with our home site, Fort
Morris State Historic site in Sunbury Georgia and provide assistance in their recreation programs throughout the year. Our
group also travels to sites in the Southeast and has been part of several film ventures that pertain to the history of that
era.
Our group is composed of two area "commands"
each with a commander and crew with equipment. The northern command is under the command of Cpt. Sam Harrison and is based
in the Atlanta area. This command has 6 men, 3 women and several teens as their crew. This command is also very active in
the Boy scout Venture crew system. They are know as Crew 1733 and have selected the mid 18th century as their study and interpretation
era.
The southern command is under the command of Dave Swinford and is located in the Savannah
Georgia area. This command has 4 men 2 women and several teens as their crew.
The whole group works under a rotating command structure whereby the overall command passes between the northen and
southern commands yearly. The northern commander has overall command on even years and the southern commander is the overall
commander on odd years.
Our group follows the safety procedures
of the Continental Line with regards to our Artillery usage as well as small arms. The only deviation being allowed for is
the more stringent rules on some state and federal DNR sites. Our history is one of complete safety with no accidents or injuries
in the time since our inception in 1995. We aim to keep our perfect record.
Our unit has a ranking structure based on time in service as well as knowledge and attendance. A soldier who works
hard, learns his history and reflects well on the unit will be promoted if he makes the minimum effort to attend at least
three events a year. Also, we have a seperate ranking system for the awarding of the title "Master Gunner." A new
recruit enters our unit as a gunner 3rd class and a private. He will not be promoted above private until he makes at least
a gunner first class. The steps are as follows. Gunner 3rd- learns the piece nominclature and procedures. He will serve the
pice at the linstock position. A gunner 2nd class has served the piece at Linstock and worm. A gunner first class has served
the piece at all 4 stations. At this time a man may be promoted beyond private at the discretion of the joint commanders. Finally, a
"Master Gunner" has served all 4 stations and has called the commands for a crew at a public event and passed a
crew critique afteraction report.
